Before you decide to buy a new
lawn mower, think about your investment before buying. Consider which mower is best for your particular lawn, as it's not that the more expensive lawn mowers are better.
When shopping for a new lawn mower, most homeowners consider price, brand, and features, and even the manufacturer's name can influence their decision-making process. Most importantly, however, the size and shape of the terrain will affect the type of mower that is best for you. All lawn mowers have advantages and disadvantages, and these should be weighed against your needs and budget.
There are many features you need to consider when choosing a lawn mower, but the size of your lawn is the first thing to consider. According to lawn care experts, the general rule of thumb is that the bigger the lawn, the bigger the mower should be to accommodate the property.
One way to think about size is to think about a tennis court. If your lawn is about half the size of the pitch, it is considered a small lawn. If your lawn is about the size of a ball court, it is considered a medium-sized lawn. If it is larger than a court, it is considered a large lawn. Once you have determined the size of your lawn, you can start thinking about which type of lawn mower to choose based on your situation.
When you start shopping around, you'll notice that there are many different types of lawn mowers, but fundamentally, nearly all lawn mowers fall into two categories, including rotary mowers and cylinder mowers.
Rotary lawn mower
Rotary push mowers are the most common type on the market, and there are a wider variety of rotary models to choose from. The working principle of a rotary lawn mower is very simple, the grass is cut by rapidly rotating the blade, and it rotates horizontally from east to west. It uses a sucking and tearing action to cut grass with one extremely fast spinning blade. Some are manually driven, but most are always motorized in some way. Rotary lawn mowers have a simple design and are ideal for small engines, either gas or electric.
Rotary mowers are powerful, heavy-weight, and ideal for a variety of grass conditions, including lawns with weeds and dandelions. Rotary lawn mowers are heavy to push, but usually, come with electric wheels. A self-propelled rotary lawn mower has a very high-speed rotating blade underneath. Due to its very high speed, the blade "shreds" the grass on impact.
Most rotary mowers have a grass box behind them, and a few have an integral grass box. These mowers work best on medium to high cuts. They are usually a better choice for large lawns and long, overgrown and unruly grasses. Most have wheels, but there are also hover mowers that float in the air, making it easier to mow lawns with slopes and uneven areas. Also, you can get variants of rotary mowers, such as riding mowers or tractor mowers, which are just larger riding versions.
Cylinder push lawn mower
There are many types of drum (reel) mowers, which can be manual or electric, using electricity or gas as a power source. The lawnmower has vertical wheels that brush up and cut the grass in a very neat and even manner. Cylinder mowers have 5 to 12 exposed blades on the front of the mower. The blade rotates the trap and rests the grass blade like a pair of scissors against a stationary base plate. The more blades on the device, the better the cut. This mower is usually quiet and relatively inexpensive.
Cylinder mowers work best on low or short cuts and are not suitable for cutting long grass. If you can't keep your grass low, this will mean frequent mowing, usually twice a week. The downside of this mowing system is that, while cutting results are better than rotary mowers, the blades of drum mowers require regular and precise adjustment to maintain the quality of the cut. This service must be done with precision or else it will cause the mower to chew on the grass, resulting in an abnormally poor cut.
